Most people know that Sedona is unique and characterized by beautiful and massive red-rock formations. Some of these formations have been given nick names such as Snoopy Rock or Coffee Pot rock. Cathedral Rock at Red Rock Crossing state park is one of the most beautifully photographed images pertaining to Sedona. These stunning red-rock formations seem to glow at sunset and many tourists make a point of finding a great spot for viewing sunsets; usually a popular location is at the Sedona airport.

Sedona’s beauty and surrounding area, including Oak Creek Canyon is as beautiful as many national parks. Oak Creek Canyon offers a beautiful winding drive beside the creek towards (or from) Flagstaff, Arizona. This stretch of highway offers many campsites and hiking trails to relax, explore and enjoy the stunning scenery. This unique city of Sedona is surrounded by 1.8 million acres of National Forest land and visitors have instant access to many recreational activities.

Sedona is a high desert at about 4,500 elevation and blessed with four mild seasons with plenty of sunshine and clean air. The annual average high temperature is 74.7 and the low 45.7 degrees. Winters are mild with occasional snow showers which can often disappear and melt within a day or two.

shutterstock_10424884Sedona has a very strong Native American history which can date as far back as B.C., with the Sinagua and Yavapai as the most recent dwellers. These people left many archeological treasures such as pottery, rock art, pueblos and cliff dwellings. The ruins of Montezuma Castle, Honanki, Palatki and Tuzigoot are reminders of an ancient era and available to visit.

The city of Sedona is very small and split between two counties, Yavapai and Coconino. Sedona was named after Sedona Arabella Miller Schnebly (1877–1950), the wife of Theodore Carlton Schnebly, the city’s first postmaster. It was originally founded in 1902 and incorporated as a city in 1988. Early settlers were farmers and ranchers and Oak Creek Canyon was well known for its peach and apple orchards.

It was later discovered by the motion picture industry for its natural beauty and became nationally recognized. Movies dating as far back as the silent era of Zane Grey to multiple westerns. Even today, it is still used for commercials and movies in unsettled surrounding areas.
